Hello GlamFam!! I love sustainable style, and I love designer pieces. When the two of them collide, it’s like fireworks. It makes me so happy that some of my favorite designers are trying to make a smaller footprint since they have such a big impact. So who are the big players doing sustainable style? Read on to learn about my favorite sustainable luxury brands!

P.S. I own pieces from all of these designers but don’t have pictures of myself in all so you will see repeats of Chanel and Gucci. In the last photo, my Mara Hoffman bikini is peeking out!

SUSTAINABLE STYLE Rx: All designers can be considered sustainable if you are purchasing pre-owned! It’s a win-win for your wallet and the environment.

CHANEL

As you all probably know by now, Chanel is one of my favorite designer brands. Not only are they a luxurious fashion-forward brand, but they have committed to reducing waste and utilizing renewable resources with their Chanel Mission 1.5. This mission keeps four main goals in mind: including reducing carbon emissions, shifting to 100% renewable electricity by 2025, offsetting residual carbon emissions, and financing climate change adaptation by working with communities impacted by climate change. Chanel is not stopping here! Below are a few of the other things they’ve accomplished in the past to change:

  • Ban in fur & exotics (2018)
  • Invested in Evolved by Nature, a green company providing silk-based alternatives to toxic chemicals used in manufacturing (2019)
  • Collaborating w/sugar-beet farmers in France, where all alcohol in Chanel’s fragrance line is made from these sugar beets
  • Partnered w/Finnish startup Sulapac to produce biodegradable packaging made from wood chips

GUCCI

Gucci is another infamous brand that is a fashion favorite of mine and many others worldwide. Their newest collection, Gucci Off the Grid, is the first collection from Gucci Circular lines utilizing ECONYL®, made from regenerated Nylon coupled with solvent-free adhesives, recycled polyester (from PET bottles) as well as recycled, organic, bio-based and sustainably sourced materials.

The Nylon comes from abandoned fishing nets, old carpets, plastics that harm marine life, and old materials that will likely end up in landfills. To support a circular production, the ECONYL® offcuts are recovered from Gucci’s manufacturing and transformed into new high-quality yarn. This first collection includes duffle bags, backpacks, sneakers, small accessories and ready to wear pieces. Isn’t that fabulous?

This brand has a ten year sustainability plan to reinforce a culture of purpose. This is an amazing sustainability plan that has been ongoing since 2015 where their targets generate positive change for people, the environment, and the planet. Below are a few of the things they’ve accomplished in the past 5 years (still have 5 to go!):

  • Increasing low-impact alternative and sustainable materials in our collections
  • Developing sustainable sourcing and innovative on-the-ground programs
  • Switching to renewable energy and implementing energy saving methods
  • Optimizing efficiencies during manufacturing with creative approaches
  • Reducing waste and scaling up circular approaches
  • Supporting the conservation and restoration of vital ecosystems around the world
  • Enhancing the lives of the people who make our products and focusing on supporting underserved communities globally

STELLA MCCARTNEY

As a brand, Stella McCartney’s commitment to sustainability is evident throughout the entire collection. All of her products are vegan including the final product and manufacturing process. Their mission is to be responsible, honest, and modern in all they provide to their customers. Committed to selling naturally feminine and modern designs, Stella has a unique variety and signature style of sharp tailoring, natural confidence and sexy femininity. I am head over heels for every piece that Stella McCartney has to offer. Their sustainability mission statement? “Challenge and push boundaries to make luxurious products in a way that is fit for the world we live in today and the future: beautiful and sustainable. No compromises.”

EILEEN FISHER

A simple wardrobe + a sustainable life – this is what Eileen Fisher is all about. Whether your style is simple and relaxed or edgy and clean, this brand creates timeless linen pieces that can be worn for years to come. When it comes to sustainability, this brand claims to be “circular by design.” They have remade and resold over 1.5 million pieces since 2009 and made them into new pieces to be worn time and time again.

Eileen Fisher envisions a future without waste, taking worn-and-torn pieces and transforming them into one-of-a-kind designs. The owner of the company, Eileen, says it best in her own words – “I envision a future where the clothing industry actually helps restore the planet. Just imagine the impact if every company took their clothes back and turned them into new designs.”

MARA HOFFMAN

One of Mara Hoffman’s main goals in creating pieces is to keep timeless pieces in circulation and out of the landfill. This company actually has a collection called the Full Circle Marketplace where pre-owned Mara Hoffman garments are bought and sold… how awesome is that?! If you have previously purchased and owned pieces by this brand, you’ll be giving these items a chance at a new beginning by bringing them full circle. This company continually focuses on sustainable materials, processes, and production in order to give each individual piece a longer lasting life. Also, the creators at Mara Hoffman believe in sustainability, they also celebrate the women who create and inspire their pieces.
