FIVE STYLE SECRETS (freebie)

Get insider access to my newsletter.

I’ll be posting my version of these pre-fall trends soon… (from Vogue.com)

1. Skinny pants are up and running again. Not to worry: There’s plenty of road ahead for the wide, seventies flare. But skinny ankle-crops are back in the game, often with a contrast band along the outside legβ€”a neat merge of tux detail and go-faster stripes. They pair excellently with all the pointy stilettos you have somewhere in your wardrobe.

2. The oversize overcoat is a proportion-maker. A coat with standout volume, balanced from the shoulder, works ideally over the new narrow pant. This is an idea that originated in the work of Helmut Lang in the nineties, reminding us what a chic, urban solution that is.

3. Tune into the tunic. A longish, vaguely A-line top over pants or leggings is a new option, meaning that there could be a new whole new life for the short dresses which have been retired to the back of the closet.

4. There’s a need for sleeves. In further layering news, many designers are working ways to cover arms, putting sweaters or blouses under dresses. That means even summer dresses can be brought into play right away, if you can find the right knit as an underpiece.

5. See the seventies through accessories. The quick route to get into the early seventies groove is to find a floppy hat, a trailing silk scarf, a chain belt, and a pendant necklace.

6. Reconsider tweed. There’s a consensus in practically every collection that checked tweed, whether in a menswear sense (houndstooth and mohair) or in the loose-woven tradition of the Chanel cardigan-jacket, which is back in a big way.

7. Ethnic print is on the up.
Own anything in paisley or ikat or the like? Haul it out right away. Many designers are thinking along these lines, through summer and into early next fall.

8. Short, sharp black-and-white looks right. As an alternative to romantic bohemia, a surprising number of little black silhouettes are back on the scene, often with crisp white trimmings. A sleeveless black-velvet dress worn over a white blouse or shirt would do it. Pair with woolly tights and flats.
