Hello Fashionable Friends! I know Spring is right around the corner, but it’s still cold over here in Fort Worth! A shawl (also known as a cape, poncho, ruana, or serape) is a fabulous wardrobe piece that’s perfect for tricky weather. They are one of my favorite throw on pieces, and I wanted to show you four EASY and CHIC ways to wear it!
ONE // OPEN FRONT
First up, let it be your “hero” piece by throwing it on over your outfit! That’s the beauty of a cape. Pun intended! ;) It elevates your outfit INSTANTLY and gives you warmth. I’ve worn this outfit when it’s chilly in the morning and heats up during the day.
THE STYLE Rx (aka Lazy Girl Glam Tip): Boost a basic outfit by throwing on a cape! It’s an easy on-and-off situation for weather that can’t make up its mind!
Under the cape, I’m wearing a sleeveless black turtleneck, distressed jeans, and silver booties. It’s a very simple outfit that works on it’s own when the cape is removed. Voila! You look great with a cape ON or OFF!
The cape is a beautiful piece that was gifted to me by MM.LaFleur. I love the contrasting trim and the simplicity of it. In case you aren’t familiar with the brand, they started the Bento Box to “take the work out of dressing for work” where a personalized box of wardrobe pieces and accessories are sent to your home. Next up is one of my favorite ways to wear a shawl! Throw one side over your shoulder and then pin it with a fun brooch! Again, it automatically elevates the look by adding a simple accessory.
Here, I’m wearing it over a long sleeve tee, skinny jeans, and over-the-knee boots. It’s so simple, but the shawl adds that certain je ne sais quoi!

Okay, maybe THIS is my favorite way to wear a poncho! LOL! Here, I’ve crossed the front and belted the poncho (only in front so the back is loose). This method cinches your waist so you don’t get lost in all the material!
Again, I’m wearing it over an every day look – cream sweater, skinny jeans, and brown booties. The magic is that the belt, booties, and hat match to tie everything together!

As you can tell, I’m a huge fan of capes! Here, I’m wearing a cape belted only on one side and worn with a dress. It creates an asymmetrical look that is fun for those of you who want to try a fashion-forward look! It would be great with jeans too. (You can see in on Cathy in the original post linked above.)
