Happy Weekend GlamFam! I’m sharing something a little different from style today, but I think it is just as important – positive self talk. In this social media age, it’s easy to compare ourselves and then think negatively about what we “should be” doing or what we “should” look like.
What if…
instead of thinking…
When I lose 10 pounds,
When I accomplish this goal,
When I earn this much,
When I don’t yell at the kids,
When I find my soulmate,
When I get this surgery,
When I have this many followers,
… then I’ll love myself.
What if…
this thought was common…
I LOVE myself TODAY because of ______.
POSITIVE SELF TALK
I shared the two photos above recently on Instagram to remind myself and community that it is IMPORTANT to have positive self talk. Here is an easy way to do every day while looking into the mirror.
- Look into the mirror (into your eyes)
- Say, “I love _____ about myself” (and REALLY mean it)
Research has shown that positive self talk can improve self-esteem, stress management, and well being. Who doesn’t need more of that? It’s also been shown to improve self confidence and decrease anxiety and negative emotions.
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF POSITIVE SELF TALK?
- I am capable of achieving my goals.
- I am deserving of love, respect, and happiness.
- I am strong and can overcome any challenges that come my way.
- I am making progress every day, no matter how small.
- I believe in myself and my abilities.
- I am grateful for the opportunities and blessings in my life.
- I am confident in my skills and can handle any situation.
- I am resilient and can bounce back from setbacks.
- I am worthy of success and abundance. – This is one that I use often.
- I am enough just as I am, and I am constantly growing and improving.
Remember, positive self talk can have a powerful impact on your mindset and overall well being. It’s important to cultivate a habit of nurturing and supportive self talk to boost your confidence, motivation, and resilience.
Many people are too hard on themselves. If there is something that you want to change about yourself, then you CAN do it. Just REMEMBER to speak nicely to yourself and that small changes over time make BIG differences.
You would never let anyone speak to your child or sister or mother and say, “You look horrible. You need to lose 10 pounds. What a loser!” If these are the types of thoughts or self talk that you have, then replace those words with something more loving.
How would you speak to your friend or child? Try something like this instead. “You want to be healthier? That’s great! Maybe we can try getting more steps by parking a little further at the grocery store.” Remember, your brain is always listening.
Maybe you have an extra 3o pounds or stretch marks. Instead of saying something negative, flip the script. Isn’t that the body that carried your beautiful children? Or that has helped you earn a living? Or that takes care of loved ones?
I’m not trying to be naive or Pollyanna about the whole thing, but I do feel like our community is in need of more positivity.
THE HAPPY Rx: Make it a habit to talk nicely to yourself every day to cultivate confidence and self love!
BOOK AND PODCAST RECOMMENDATIONS
Maybe the words that I am sharing to help aren’t resonating with you. There are lots of other people who I have read and listened to who make a huge and positive difference in my thoughts and view of myself. Here are some great book and podcast recommendations:
- The High 5 Habit by Mel Robbins
- The Mel Robbins Podcast
- The Power of One More by Ed Mylett
- The Ed Mylett Podcast
- Earn Your Happy Podcast
- Atomic Habits by James Clear
After typing all of these out, I realize the common word in almost all of the books is HABIT. It is a habit and PRACTICE that you have to do in order to think more positively about yourself and life. I added a few extra books that I have read and loved in the shop below.
Please let me know if this blog post resonates or helps you! Have a fabulous weekend!
