Can you believe it’s only ONE week until Thanksgiving?!  So much to do, so little time!  EEK.  At least I’ve got my Thanksgiving outfit picked out! ;)

In case you didn’t know, I LOVE layering.  Some of my friends call me a layering queen, if that tells you anything.  The more, the merrier.  Mr. S calls me a mini Iris Apfel, which is a total compliment, even though I’m not as talented as her in the “creative” department.

On my usual (almost daily) trip to Target (or Tarjay, as me and my friends call it), my eyes caught a glimpse of this gorgeous plaid poncho as I was headed to the diaper section.  We did a screeching halt and 90-degree turn so I could try it on…  TOTALLY in my cart.  I’ve been a huge fan of plaid lately (see here and here), and this is a perfect layering piece for Fall and Winter.  The fur collar is detachable, so it lends to a casual look if needed.  Hooray for multi-use pieces!

The poncho is fabulous over this cute gold foil sweater (you can see it in the close-up of the jewelry).  Can you say Thanksgiving outfit?  To give myself a little more shape, I belted it!  The secret is belting just the front so it appears that you have a waist, but leaving the back out so it dramatically flows while you walk.  You know I love some good STYLE DRAMA! LOL!

Let’s talk about that jewelry, shall we?!  Isn’t that the cutest statement necklace?  Can you believe it’s from Tarjay?  Well, I wore it with a gold pearl choker and lariat necklace for even more of a statement. One, two, three, and done!  See, layering is easy peasy.

THE STYLE Rx:  Layer it on!  You’ll be cozy-chic this season.

  • Start with a basic layer in a neutral. (Stripes are considered neutral.)  If you’re wearing a poncho over it, use a base layer with a slimmer silhouette, such as a turtleneck or simple sweater, to prevent being too lumpy.
  • Throw on your next layer.  Ponchos and blanket scarves are perfect for layering. Wear them as-is, belted (as I’ve shown you), or with one side thrown over your shoulder.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix materials, play with texture, and wear more than two layers!  I’ve got fur, plaid, metallics, leather, and cream going on up there.  The trick is having one color to tie everything together.  I used brown as my color (hat, belt, bag, and boots).
  • Consider proportions (with a poncho). The bottoms can be skinny jeans OR pair it with wide legs/flares for an elegant ’70s alternative.
  • Add your accessories (such as hats, fur scarves, and necklaces). When layering necklaces, a 2-inch difference in the length will create beautiful depth -e.g. 16-inch, 18-inch, 20-inch necklaces worn together.  Or you can try extreme differences in length, such as a statement necklace and a long pendant.

So what do you think?  Are you loving layers?  What is your layering trick?!
