For those of you that just tuned in, From Grandma with Love is a twice-monthly series that is one of my faves! I’m lucky to be the recipient of my Grandmother-in-law’s beautiful wardrobe. She owned so many unique pieces, and I’ve had the MOST FABULOUS time styling it on the blog. It’s a win-win for me because I ADORE vintage and a fun excuse to wear it!
Where do I even begin with this dress and jacket set? First, I love that it is mod but still applies to modern day style. Second, it is neutral (beige/brown), but the color blocking makes it so bold! Third, the cut is just so flattering especially with the angle of the bodice and the straight skirt. All of that to say… I LOVE this set! It makes me feel like a lovely lady!
So what’s the deal with color blocking?
It’s pretty simple.
- Your clothing piece contains multiple blocks of color (as seen in my dress/jacket) or
- Your outfit is composed of pieces that are different colors like a red top and pink skirt.
THE STYLE Rx: Color blocking is so visually striking. You can do it with neutrals like black and white (or beige and brown as above). And Spring is a great time to try color blocking with color!
So how do you do color blocking?
- Stick with the same saturation. Bright with bright, and pastel with pastel. For example, wear cobalt blue with bright orange or pastel pink with mint green.
- Think of the color wheel.
- Complementary Colors: colors opposite of each other on the color wheel. Something like yellow and violet would make a maximum impact in an outfit!
- Analogous Colors: color next to each other on the color wheel. An example would be blue, indigo, and violet. I tend to love these kinds of color blocking combos.
- Triad Color: Think of placing a triangle on the color wheel, and it would be the three points of the triangle. The primary colors yellow, red, and blue are a triad.
- Have fun! This is always one of my tips! Remember that you can change a piece. It’s clothing and meant to make you feel good about yourself!
Do you own any color block pieces and what are your tips? What’s your favorite color block combination? Mine is red and pink (or anything with pink)! Are you surprised?
Happy Friday Loves! This week has been a doozie. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the time change, but we are all out of whack. The kids are tired. The adults are tired. I think I’m super behind on EVERYTHING! (Somehow, I got three posts up this week because I anticipated the craziness last week and did them ahead of time!)
I’m getting ready to head to LA with the gals next week! If you know of a must see or do, then please share!
