Think about how easy it is to apply makeup with your fingers when you’re in a hurry. These brushes were designed to be ergonomically similar to the finger but with WAY MORE IMPRESSIVE results! In fact, when I was first testing out these brushes, one of my girlfriends told me how great my makeup looked and asked me how I blended everything. AND my girlfriends, Cathy and Heather, bought this set when we were in LA because they saw how great the application was since we were sharing a hotel room.
WHAT YOU GET //
I’m reviewing the 5-brush collection which retails for $170 and the Oval 7 brush. The 5-Brush set includes the Oval 6, Oval 4, Oval 3, Linear 1, and Circle 1 brush. You can also purchase each brush separately or in a 10-brush collection.
The actual brush is composed of CosmeFibre, an animal free, nonporous, and synthetic fiber that tapers to 4 microns so it can hold and deliver more product. It is SO SOFT and very dense that you might think it’s some kind of fur! BTW, the fibers also have a little “memory” to them. So if you toss them into your makeup bag while traveling and they get smooshed, you can just wet and reset.
Here is a list of the brushes and what makeup application they are used for:
Oval 7 – Foundation, Concealer, Highlight, Blush, Bronzer, Powder (loose or pressed), Skincare products
Oval 6 – Foundation, Blush, Contour
Oval 4 – Eye makeup, Concealer
Oval 3 – Eye makeup, Concealer
Linear 1 – Eye liner, Brows
Circle 1 – Lip colour, Eye shadow, Spot Concealer
STORAGE //
Currently, I have my brushes stored upright in a mint julep cup on my bathroom vanity. They are similar to traditional makeup brushes in the fact that they don’t take up much space stored standing up. The Artis Collection has accessories like travel cases and display stands too. I purchased this display stand for the Fluenta Collection which also fits the Elite Smoke Collection. BTW, it looks so beautiful when it’s the only thing on your bathroom vanity.
COMPARED TO ARTIS FLUENTA BRUSHES //
I’ve also shown a comparison picture with the Artis Fluenta brushes. Right away, you’ll notice the size difference. The Elite Smoke collection is smaller and lighter in weight. I didn’t think this would make much of a difference, but the compactness of these brushes are so much easier to use! As you can see, I did use my Artis Fluenta Oval 6 brush TO DEATH and it separated from the handle likely due to the heaviness of the brush component. I was still able to use it (similar to their Palm Brushes) without any issue. It just doesn’t look pretty anymore.
HOW TO APPLY //
It initially takes some getting used to, but then it’s like second nature (since using your finger is natural right)! After each application with the brush, I wipe it clean on the microfiber cleaning pad.
Additionally, since the Cosmefibres are SO DENSE, you literally need to touch your makeup (like eyeshadows/blush) and enough is deposited on the brush to apply to your face. I made the mistake of going fast and being used to swiping my eyeshadow and WHOA extreme smokey eye! LOL! So, basically, you use less makeup so it makeup lasts longer!
- For foundation, I’ll dot it on four areas of my face and then use the Oval 7 to spread/smooth it all over my face.
- For concealer, I use the Oval 4 brush and swipe it into my Sappho Beauty concealer pot, and then apply under my eyes and as a eyelid primer/base.
- For contouring and blush, I use the Oval 6 brush.
- For eyeshadow, I use the Circle 1 to apply my cream eyeshadow + contour and then the Oval 3 brush to apply eyeshadow on the lids.
- For liner/under my eyes, I use the Linear 1 brush which can also be used for eyebrows (as seen in this video I made from the last Artis brush post)
HOW TO CLEAN //
As stated above, I wipe each brush clean on the microfiber cleaning pad after each application which allows me to use the same brush for different colors/creams. It’s almost like magic!
If using a cream/liquid, then dispense a dollop of cleansing foam onto the microfiber pad. Dip the brush into the foam and then rub back and forth until it’s clean. They recommend using the foam cleanser after each use of creams/liquid, but I honestly don’t do that.
When makeup starts to build up and you notice that the CosmeFibres get stiff/don’t go back into place, then I use the cleansing foam with a brush cleansing palette and warm water to really clean it.
MY THOUGHTS //
I have been using Artis makeup brushes since 2015 so obviously, I’m a fan of the brand. I was very happy with my Fluenta brushes and didn’t think they could get any better but THEY HAVE. These smaller and lightweight Elite Smoke brushes are definitely my preference now. If you need a set of good makeup brushes, then I think these are FAB.U.LOUS.
I’m SO HAPPY these have exceeded my expectations, and I’m really surprised that I like the Elite Smoke Collection so much since I ADORED my Fluenta brushes.
PROS //
There are so many! Where do I begin? First, they are durable and last. As mentioned above, I’ve been using the Fluenta brushes for the past 3 years and only the Oval 6 “died”. I do not think it will happen with the Oval 7 brush because it’s all one continuous piece and the brush is smaller (therefore lighter). Second, my makeup application looks “flawless” – I’m using the words of my friend! It blends SO WELL. Third, you use less makeup because it applies it so efficiently. Fourth, since it’s synthetic fibers, you don’t have to worry about allergies from animal hair (or any animal cruelty).
CONS //
The obvious big one is cost. HOWEVER, if you consider it’s ~$34 a brush ($170/5-brush set) then that’s not too shabby! And if you take into consideration how long they last, then it almost equals itself out. That’s the cost-per-wear fashion gal of me side talking out loud!
That’s only considering the 5-brush set. If you add the Oval 7 brush and accessories like the microfiber brush pad and foam cleanser then it’s more. However, it DOES last a long time if you take care of it and you could start with the 5-piece set and add more as you need/save.
WOULD I PURCHASE THIS AGAIN?
Yes!!! I was lucky that the brand gifted me the brushes, but I would gladly purchase them myself anyways! (I only like to share brands/pieces that I would organically buy or try myself.) Luckily, I probably won’t have to since they last so long! The cost of that display stand was basically the same/more than a set of 5-brushes but that HOW MUCH I liked those brushes… that I would buy a display stand! LOL!
